Welcome to HealthLIMS

HealthLIMS is a laboratory information management system (LIMS) that supports the full life cycle of testing human biospecimens. As a government off-the-shelf (GOTS) application, HealthLIMS is an enterprise system that represents a high-value, low-cost solution for state Health Departments, including a web portal for local/county labs to input submission data and review testing results.

Functionality, Workflow and Instrument Integration

HealthLIMS fully automates the accession process in a health laboratory. External organizations, such as a local Department of Health or other health laboratory, can use the web portal to start the submission process and generate bar-coded forms to ship with the samples. At the lab, receiving clerks unpack them and use barcode scanners to instantly retrieve the submission record. The specimen(s) route through the health lab based on the specific accessions requested; as each accession is completed, HealthLIMS automatically notifies the submitter of the results. Via the web portal, submitters can see their full history of submissions and results. It also support traditional means of communications, such as U.S. mail, fax, and email. HealthLIMS creates output in formats defined by Health Level Seven (HL7) International and by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as spreadsheets; the specific output will vary based on the interface. Using pre-defined outputs enables seamless integration with the Pennsylvania National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS), the CDC’s National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS), and the CDC’s PulseNet.

Based on the specific test/results, HealthLIMS also will generate messages or files to send to the appropriate external entities. It thus represents a critical government-to-government (G2G) component for public health, supporting the full local-state-federal spectrum of public health testing/results.
